"Fabulous February!" 2015

A Winter Carnival Celebrating 37 Years of Family Fun!
This year’s winter carnival is jam-packed with adventure, entertainment and all-out fun!

Monday, February 16
Old-Fashioned Hot Dog Roast/Sleigh Rides in Forest Park: All activities, weather permitting, will take place next to the basketball courts from 11:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. - $2.00 per person for hayride.  Beginning at 12 noon, roast your own hot
dog over an open fire for $1.00!  Popcorn and beverages available at our snack bar for $1.00 each.  See how beautiful Forest Park is by touring it from a horse-drawn sleigh (conditions permitting!) or hay wagon!  

Mission Impossible – Children ages 7 – 15 years old are challenged to navigate their way through the wilderness on the grounds of Forest Park at the ECOS building on Porter Lake. The mission, should you decide to accept, will begin at 9:30 a.m. through 11:30 a.m., with Brad Miller of Next Level Adventures leading the way and preparing you for the afternoon challenge. The clock will be ticking as secrets, skills and surprises comprise this adventurous mission! This FREE adventure opportunity will be offered in two parts. The afternoon session runs from 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m. with a hotdog roast provided for lunch.  Limited space is available - pre-registration for EACH session a must! 

A Bird’s-eye View-  Rare birds that is!  Be fascinated and entertained by Tom Ricardi and his “Birds of Prey” under the tent by the Recreation Office in Forest Park.  Tom and friends will be flying by for one fun-filled show at 12:15 p.m.


Magic Show- Be spellbound by “Impossible…the show that asks will you believe your eyes…or your mind?” The amazing magician Conrad McIntire will baffle even the sharpest observer at 2:00 p.m. under the tent by the Recreation Office in Forest Park. Don’t be late because it all disappears at 3:00 p.m.!        

Wednesday, February 18

“Wildlife Wednesday”- Urban Cowboy Part I: Come explore with us as we learn how the creatures that live in our city forest have come to live here, and why they are here.  We will determine how wildlife critters are our friends because of what they do for us!

Adventure Challenge- Children ages 7 – 15 years old are challenged to navigate through the wilderness on the grounds of Forest Park.  The adventures will take place at the Porter Lake Skatehouse in Forest Park from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. with Brad Miller of Next Level Adventures leading the way with an action-packed afternoon that includes a scavenger hunt, survival games, shelter building, and MORE!  Call early to reserve your place for this once in a lifetime wild ‘n raucous adventure. This FREE-adventure opportunity has limited space available.  Pre-registration a must!

“Think Trees Thursday” -Urban Cowboy Part II: Come discover why our green friends are so important to life as we know it.  RE-think how you look at trees as you unlock the value they provide.

Pool, Pizza, & Ice Cream Party – A “Fab Fave” returns at Central High School on Roosevelt Avenue.  The fun begins for children ages 5 – 15 years old with swimming from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 noon.  At noon, participants will have a pizza party, followed by a “make your own” sundae bar!  The program ends at 2:00 p.m.  Cost for the program is $10.00 (cash only) per person, and is payable on site.   Please note that children who cannot swim MUST be accompanied by an adult/legal guardian in the pool. Space is limited and pre-registration required. Proper swimwear is a MUST.

Trivia Challenge- Test your knowledge in this fast-paced interactive trivia challenge.  Win prizes!  The clock is winding down and
we need your answers!  Are you coming?  We sure hope so.  Game time is from 12:30-2:00 p.m. at Central High School’s cafeteria.  This
program is part of the pool, pizza ice cream party, so registration is required.

“Freshwater Friday” - Urban Cowboy Part III: Find out how and why water is the driving force that connects all of us in this amazing session.  Answer this:  If you drop a candy wrapper into the river, is that a good thing or a harmful thing?  Learn the answer to this question and so many more as the watershed experience becomes crystal clear!!!!

Sweetheart Carriage Rides- Romance is in the air in Forest Park!  Take a scenic ride through Forest Park this Valentine’s Day with a loved one in a beautiful horse-drawn carriage.  Reservations required.  Call 787-6435 to book your ride.  There is a $35.00 fee per couple and space is limited.  Each carriage ride can hold up to four people, and reservations run from 2:00 noon – 5:00 p.m. Ride leaves from the Recreation Office

“Fabulous February!” Invitational Basketball Tournament - The annual Edward J. Moriarty Memorial Tournament will take place at Chestnut Accelerated Middle School gym on Plainfield Street during the vacation week.  Come support some of Springfield’sfinest players in this double-elimination event for boys, ages 8-10 years old.  Call the Recreation Office for complete schedule

Urban Cowboy- We’re looking for a few good cowboys…ones that are eager to learn about the wonders that are contained in Forest Park. This fast-paced hands-on adventure will take you into the world of wildlife, trees and water through the eyes of the experts in this three-part series. Children ages 8 – 13 years are welcome.  Pre-registration is required for this FREE program that runs 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon, and meets at the old monkey house building in Forest Park, adjacent to the Park Administration building.  Register for one or all three!  Descriptions for each session above.
