AQUATICS CERTIFICATIONSA.) Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO)- To become AFO Certified, you must attend the 16-hour certification course, designed for the full time pool operator, and pass the written exam. Some of the topics covered in this class include filtration, disinfection, water testing and treatment, design considerations, facility management, risk management, and facility troubleshooting. The National Certification Board of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) will officially certify all individuals who successfully complete the course, which is a five-year, renewable certification. This class if offered to City of Springfield Employees who maintain the School and City pools. Classes are run by the City’s Aquatics Division on an as needed basis. In order to run the class there has to be a minimum of 10 candidates. For public certification classes go to www.pooloperationmanagement.com . The next classes being offered in Springfield are on April 12-13 and May 19-20, 2012. Or you can go to www.nspf.org for certification classes in Springfield on April 4-5 and June 26-27, 2012. B.) Water Safety Instructor (WSI) – In order to become WSI certified, you must be at least 16 years old, and be able to pass a pre-course skills test consisting of 50 yards of the following strokes: Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Sidestroke, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, and Butterfly (10 yds.). You must attend and pass a 30 hour American Red Cross Training Course. In this class you will learn teaching techniques, swim levels, strokes, and safety. You will be able to teach the six levels of a learn to swim program. This is a two year certification. The City of Springfield will provide an instructor when there is at least 6 participants interested. C.) Lifeguard Instructor (LI) – In order to become a LI, you must be at least 17 years old and already be lifeguard, CPR and First Aid Certified (Professional Rescuer). You must attend and pass a 30 hour American Red Cross or YMCA Training Course. In this class you will learn teaching techniques, training skills, and grading methods. This is a two year certification. The City of Springfield will provide an instructor when there is at least 6 participants interested. D.) Lifeguarding– In order to become a Lifeguard, you must be at least 15 years old and be able to attend and pass a 30-37 hour American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard Training Course. In this class you will learn how to prevent injuries, recognize and respond to emergencies, learn how to enforce facility rules and educate the public, and learn CPR and First Aid for the Professional Rescuer. Lifeguards receive three certifications upon successful completion of this course, which are, Lifeguarding, CPR for the professional rescuer and First Aid. A certification in Waterfront Lifeguarding is an option for all lifeguards wanting to work at a lake or pond site, such as 5-Mile Pond. The Lifeguarding course is taught 2-4 times a year by the City’s Aquatics Department. Classes will always run during February and April's School Vacation Week. Training can also be attained by contacting the Red Cross, YMCA, and local area Colleges. E.) CPR and First Aid Certification - In order to become CPR certified, you must attend and pass a 16 hour Red Cross or American Heart Association Training Course. For First Aid, you must attend and pass an 8 hour Red Cross or American Heart Associations Training Course. Usually these two courses are taught together. In this class you will learn how to ensure safety, respond to emergencies, provide care, and learn life saving techniques. CPR is a one year certification and First Aid is a three year certification. To get certified in CPR and First Aid, contact the Red Cross, YMCA, local area Colleges, or you can take the Lifeguard Training Course, which is a three fold Certification. ![]() AQUATICS LESSONSAll classes sponsored by the Department of Parks, Buildings & Recreation Mangement- Aquatics Division AND The Greater Springfield YMCAA.) Parent/Child Classes- The YMCA Parent and Child Swim Program is a nationally recognized program which promotes water enrichment and aquatics readiness activities for children ages 6 months to 3 years of age. Parent and child participate in water adjustment activities including blowing bubbles, kicking, paddling and jumping in. Games and songs are used to create a fun atmosphere and help children feel comfortable in the pool. This class is being offered at Kiley Middle School on Monday and Wednesday nights, starting January 7, 2013. . This is a 7 week class. Please Call Noel at 739-6951 x169 to register. B.) Pre-School Learn To Swim Classes (Ages 3-5) - A swim class for new and beginner swimmers. Children develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water and learn to swim individually with a bubble. Swimmers are taught pool safety, the paddle stroke, kicking, floating, blowing bubbles and jumping into the pool. This class is being offered at Kiley Middle School on Monday and Wednesday nights starting on January 7, 2013. The classes are first come first serve. Please Call Noel at 739-6951 x169 to register. The cost for the entire 7 week class is $40 for 1 visit a week or $65 for 2 visits a week . C.) Stroke and Turn Clinic (Ages 5-14) - This program will focus on the skills and technique needed for competitive swimming. Clinic will focus on the 4 competitive strokes including extensive work on turns, starts and stroke technique. Program will meet 2 times per week for 45 minutes. (Monday and Wednesday nights at Kiley Middle School from 7:15-8pm). The cost for this class is $90. D.) Swim Clinic (Ages 14-18) - This program will focus on the skills and technique needed for competitive swimming. Clinic will focus on the 4 competitive strokes including extensive work on turns, starts and stroke technique. Program will meet 2 times per week (Monday and Wednesdays at Commerce High School). The 6pm class is for ages 14-15 and the 7:15pm class is for ages 16-18. The cost for this class is $100 for 10 weeks. D.) Competitive Swim Pre-Team (Ages 4 – 10) - This program will help develop those skills necessary for success for competitive swim team. Class will focus on the 4 competitive strokes with work on starts, turns and stroke technique. Program will meet once per week for 45 minutes. The cost for this class is $45. E.) Adult Swim Classes (Ages 18+) - Beginner – Basic of Swimming: Start with the basics and become more comfortable in the water. This class will introduce basic body position, breathing methods and begin to build your strength and self confidence in the water. Our instructors will work on floating and kicking drills to begin with and will assist each participant improve at their pace. Class will meet for 45 minutes. Intermediate- Stroke Development: Learn how to swim more effectively. This class will review the various strokes and improve arm, leg and head positions. Our instructors will help to identify specific areas for improvement and assist you in becoming a more confident swimmer. The cost for the entire 7 week class is $40. F.) Sunrise Swim- Before School Teacher Fitness Swim with the permission of your principal. There must be at lest two people to swim. Never swim alone! G.) Family Swim Night- Monday and Wednesday nights at Milton Bradley. Starts November 5th, 2012. FREE! H.) Water Aerobics - Starts March 27th, 2012. The class runs on Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Milton Bradley School on 22 Mulberry Street. The 5:30pm class is advanced shallow end aerobics and the 6:45pm class is beginner shallow end aerobics. Programs are closed on Holidays.
