IMPORTANT AQUATICS INFORMATION

New Aquatics Programs....

LEARN TO SWIM -  Starts March 31st, 2014 at Milton Bradley School on Monday and Wednesday nights, for 4 weeks.  There are three class times: 5:15, 6:15 and 7:15.  Also 2 class times at Kiley Middle School on Tuesday and Thursday nights for 4 weeks starting on April 8, 2014 and then on Saturdays starting on April 12, 2014 at 9:30am or 10:30am.  Fee is $60 per person.  Certified Instructors and Lifeguards running the classes.  Call Stacey to pre-register at 787-6298.

WATER AEROBICS -   Next Class TBD.

FAMILY SWIM NIGHT - Takes place on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5:30-7:30pm at Milton Bradley School, 22 Mulberry Street.  Started January 7, 2014.  Ends on April 25, 2014.  Fee is $2 per person.  Adult required.  Certified Lifeguards will be present.

APRIL VACATION LIFE GUARD TRAINING CLASS - At Commerce High School.  Pre-test is Tuesday, April 15 from 6-8pm.  Class is April 22-25 from 8:30am-4pm.  Class fee is $150 per person.  $175 for out of City participants. Call (413) 787-6298 to sign up.

MAY LIFE GUARD TRAINING CLASS- At Commerce High School.  Classes are on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday for two weeks.  The dates are May 5,8,10,12,15,17,15.  Week nights meet from 4-9pm and Saturdays from 8am-2pm. Class fee is $150 per person.  $175 for out of City participants. Call (413) 787-6298 to sign up.

The Springfield Department of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management and the YMCA is proud to announce the following NEW public aquatics programs:

1.) Parent/Child Classes - The YMCA Parent and Child Swim Program is a nationally recognized program which promotes water enrichment and aquatics readiness activities for children ages 6 months to 3 years of age. Parent and child participate in water adjustment activities including blowing bubbles, kicking, paddling and jumping in. Games and songs are used to create a fun atmosphere and help children feel comfortable in the pool.  This is a 7 week class.  Please Call 739-6951 to register.

2.) Pre-School (3-5) and Youth (6-12) Learn To Swim Classes - A swim class for new and beginner swimmers. Children develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water and learn to swim individually with a bubble. Swimmers are taught pool safety, the paddle stroke, kicking, floating, blowing bubbles and jumping into the pool.  The classes are first come first serve.  Please Call 739-6951 to register.

3.) Stroke n Turn Clinic (Ages 5-14) - This program will focus on the skills and technique needed for competitive swimming. Clinic will focus on the 4 competitive strokes including extensive work on turns, starts and stroke technique. Program will meet 2 times per week for 45 minutes. Please Call 739-6951 to register.

4.) Competitive Swim Pre-Team (Ages 4 10) - This program will help develop those skills necessary for success for competitive swim team. Class will focus on the 4 competitive strokes with work on starts, turns and stroke technique.  Please Call 739-6951 to register.

5.) Adult Swim Classes (Ages 18+) - Beginner Basic of Swimming: Start with the basics and become more comfortable in the water. This class will introduce basic body position, breathing methods and begin to build your strength and self confidence in the water. Our instructors will work on floating and kicking drills to begin with and will assist each participant improve at their pace. Class will meet for 45 minutes.   Intermediate- Stroke Development: Learn how to swim more effectively. This class will review the various strokes and improve arm, leg and head positions. Our instructors will help to identify specific areas for improvement and assist you in becoming a more confident swimmer. Class will meet for 45 minutes. Please Call 739-6951 to register.

6.) Sunrise Swim- By approved permit only!  Lifeguard presence required.

SWIM TEST FOR EMPLOYMENT

City of Springfield Lifeguards must pass a swim test for employment.  There are two possilbe dates to attend. The dates are Thursday, May 29, 2014 OR Thursday, June 5, 2014.  The testing will take place at Milton Bradley Elementary School on 22 Mulberry Street from 6-8pm.  If you are hired, we will do hiring paperwork, the same night, in the cafeteria at 8:15pm.  A State issued picture ID (drivers permit, license, Mass ID) is required and one of the following, a birth certificate or a social security card.  If you have a passport then that is all you will need.

All classes take place at Central High School - 1840 Roosevelt Ave. You can only do one of the two classes per night.
Fee is $60 for each pair or $100 for both.

The next YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor course is TBD.  Attendance at and active participation in all sessions is required; there is also a written exam at the end of the program.  Lesson plans and block plans must be completed and submitted for review by the Instructor.  The fee is $175 for non YGS-staff and $75 for staff.  To sign up call (413) 739-6951.

 

YMCA Lifeguard Instructor Course -

The next YMCA Lifeguard Instructor Trainer course is TBD.   Attendance at and active participation in all sessions is required; there is also a written exam at the end of the course.  The fee is $175 for non YGS-staff and $75 for staff.  To sign up call (413) 739-6951.

 

 

Lifeguard Instructor Course

Current certification as a lifeguard is required for entry into this program. 

We need more applicants to be able to run this class.  A minimum of 6 people are required to run this class.  Please call to sign up if you are interested.

Fee: $150 includes course materials and certification
